Thank you sincerely to those that participated in the survey!

The survey received 504 responses and as expected, the results were very polarized. However, acknowledging the challenges and concerns with the downtown area is crucial as we move forward with vital revitalization efforts.

Regarding outdoor amenities, the community has expressed concerns about the lack of green spaces, seating areas and public spots for rest and recreation. However, there is also positive feedback, with many noting that the downtown area is generally clean, safe, and well-lit. The majority of respondents agreed that the city offers good accessibility downtown for cars, bikes, and pedestrians, with sidewalks generally in good condition and street crossings deemed safe. Nearly 67% of participants felt there is sufficient, easily accessible parking in the downtown area. While the downtown is easily reachable via major highways, many citizens believe that directional signage could be improved and updated for better navigation. Additionally, while special events in the downtown area were generally well-received, there was a consensus that the city's promotion and marketing efforts could be strengthened.

When it comes to housing and employment opportunities, the community expressed concern over vacant storefronts, a lack of job prospects, and the prevalence of dilapidated properties and buildings. Despite the challenges posed by these neglected structures, 66% of residents agreed that the downtown area still boasts quality historical architecture.

The majority of survey participants agreed that while the downtown area offers a good mix of affordable, customer-friendly businesses, it is not as supportive of business owners and entrepreneurs. This may help explain why most respondents feel the downtown area lacks vibrancy, both during the day and in the evening.

Arguably one of the more discouraging results was the generalized idea that the downtown area is lacking charm, community pride and a spirit of volunteerism. The Jeannette Initiative board of directors disagrees with this view. As a non-profit aspiring to improve and revitalize the downtown area, we hope to appeal to all citizens with our mission, fostering a sense of pride and subsequently volunteerism with revitalization efforts. Reminding those with fond memories of Jeannette of the city’s potential, encouraging new citizens to support the revitalization and instilling pride in our youth.

The Jeannette Initiative's community perception survey marks the first step toward securing Main Street Designation for Jeannette. The insights gathered will play a key role in shaping the narrative for our Main Street Designation application. We sincerely thank our community for their participation and look forward to continuing our progress toward revitalizing our beloved city!
